Timoteo Almeida
Dr. Timoteo Almeida is an incoming Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine / UPMC (effective July 2026). As the nation’s only dual-trained neurosurgeon and radiation oncologist actively practicing both operative functional neurosurgery and advanced radiation medicine, his clinical focus bridges the gap between the operating room and the radiosurgery suite.
His approach to complex brain and spine conditions is rooted in an exceptionally rare educational background. Dr. Almeida completed full residency training in both Neurological Surgery and Radiation Oncology , complemented by a PhD in Surgery. He further refined his expertise through rigorous subspecialty fellowships in functional neurosurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and skull base surgery across leading institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Brazil.
By eliminating traditional specialty silos, Dr. Almeida provides patients with a singular, unbiased evaluation. Whether a condition requires deep brain stimulation, open microsurgery, or stereotactic radiosurgery, his recommendations are driven entirely by what will yield the most durable outcome. Beyond the clinic, Dr. Almeida is an active investigator with the International Radiosurgery Research Foundation, having authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters dedicated to advancing non-invasive treatments for complex neurologic disorders.
What We Treat
-
◦ Movement disorders — Advanced interventions for essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, and dystonia.
-
◦ Epilepsy and seizure disorders — Comprehensive evaluation and network-guided surgical interventions
-
◦ Neuromodulation and pain — Including spinal cord stimulation and targeted therapies for appropriately selected patients
-
◦ Facial pain syndromes — Specialized surgical and radiosurgical treatment for conditions including trigeminal neuralgia and tumor-related facial pain
-
◦ Brain tumors — Unbiased evaluation for both minimally invasive surgical approaches and stereotactic radiosurgery
Education & Training
Dr. Almeida’s background is singular in American medicine. His education spans over a decade of dedicated training across international institutions, combining full residencies in both neurological surgery and radiation oncology, alongside rigorous subspecialty fellowships in operative functional neurosurgery. This exceptionally rare combination guarantees patients receive truly full-spectrum, expert care.

Clinical Philosophy
Many neurologic conditions have more than one effective pathway to relief—stimulation vs. ablation, open surgery vs. radiosurgery. With formal training in functional neurosurgery and precision radiation medicine, Dr. Almeida can evaluate options such as DBS, MR-guided focused ultrasound, and Gamma Knife when appropriate—without being locked into one tool. Focused on what matters most to you, your symptoms, goals, and imaging findings are considered together to design a patient-centered plan that favors the safest, least invasive option likely to achieve durable relief.
Patient-Centered
Careful anatomic and network-based understanding of every diagnosis
Shared Decisions
Clear communication and goals that matter to you
Least Invasive
The simplest approach that reliably achieves the goal
Durable Outcomes
Function, quality of life, and long-term benefit
