Functional Neurosurgery
& Precision Radiation Medicine
Timoteo Almeida
Beginning July 2026, Dr. Almeida will join the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine / UPMC as Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiation Oncology. He completed full residency training in both neurological surgery and radiation oncology, an exceptionally uncommon pathway in the United States, and is among the very few physicians applying that training across operative functional neurosurgery and neuromodulation, stereotactic radiosurgery, and advanced radiation medicine.
This background allows patients to be evaluated across surgical, device-based, and non-invasive options by one physician trained in all of them — rather than through separate consultations with separate specialists.
Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese
Functional Neurosurgery
Direct expertise in deep brain stimulation, focused ultrasound, stereotactic procedures, and neuromodulation for movement disorders, pain, and psychiatric conditions.
Radiation Oncology
Expertise in stereotactic radiosurgery and CNS radiation oncology, delivering highly targeted, incisionless treatment guided by a deep understanding of tissue response and long-term control.
What We Treat
His practice spans deep brain stimulation, MR-guided focused ultrasound, spinal cord stimulation, laser ablation, and stereotactic radiosurgery, integrating the full spectrum of surgical and non-invasive options.
Movement Disorders and Psychiatric Neuromodulation
Essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, dystonia, OCD, refractory depression, and Tourette syndrome.
Failed Back Surgery and Complex Pain Syndromes
Persistent spinal pain syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and spasticity.
Facial Pain and Trigeminal Neuralgia
Full range of evaluation and treatment options for trigeminal neuralgia and related facial pain syndromes.
Brain Tumors and Vascular Malformations
Brain metastases, meningioma, vestibular schwannoma, and AVMs, with emphasis on stereotactic radiosurgery and minimally invasive approaches.
Integrated Expertise Across Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology
Most patients with tremor, facial pain, or brain metastases are evaluated by separate specialists, each recommending the tool in their toolbox. With dual training in functional neurosurgery and radiation oncology, you get a single evaluation across DBS, focused ultrasound, radiosurgery, and microsurgery — and a recommendation shaped by your anatomy and goals, not by the referral pathway you happened to enter through.
Plain-language guides, treatment comparisons, and post-op instructions for every condition.
